The aim with the Continuing Professional Development Programme for Teachers is to raise the competence of teachers in order to help students better fulfil educational goals. The focus is on strengthening the competence of teachers in both the theory of their subject and educational methodology.

The National Agency for Education has been given the task of implementing the initiative.

Continuing Professional Development for Teachers provides more than 200 courses tailored to the needs of practising teachers and cover both detailed subject theory and educational methodology. Furthermore, teachers participating can keep 80 percent of their salary whilst studing. The courses are offered at quarter, half and full time rates of study and there are also opportunities to study using distance technologies. Teachers can also choose courses from the normal range of courses provided by universities and university colleges. However, taking part in the Continuing Professional Development Programme for Teachers also means that the teachers will meet other practising teachers and exchange views and experience with each other.
